With a natural harbour and a long history, where the Phoenicians,
Carthaginians, Romans and moors once settled here, Lagos was the base
port for Africa during the age of the Great Discoveries in the 15th
century.
- Ponta da Bandeira Fort -
The Ponta
da Bandeira is a 17th century fort, which was used to guard the harbour,
and is now an interesting museum dedicated to the Great Discoveries,
containing reproductions of old maps, diagrams, and pictures of sailing
ships of that time. At the top right hand corner, look out for a
small arcade, which was Europe's first slave trade
market. Apart from this, Lagos has all the components
to have a successful holiday, with plenty of site seeing,
good restaurants, friendly atmosphere and wonderful
beaches.
